A new way to deceive unsuspecting citizens and to extract sensitive personal data, financial data or security codes through phone calls has been found by fraudsters, according to complaints made recently to the Directorate of Cybercrime. According to a statement by the ELAS, the phone calls are made from landlines or mobile phones using a recorded message in English or Greek. The perpetrators, posing as police authorities, urge citizens to follow specific steps in order to be informed of criminal offences allegedly pending against them. For their safety, the Directorate of Cybercrime recommends that citizens. – They should be cautious about making such calls. – Do not call back a number that was communicated to them by voice message, be cautious. – Not to discuss with anyone who calls them and asks for sensitive information. – Not to disclose their online banking codes, card details or other sensitive information via email or telephone. – Not to give out their credit or debit card “PIN” or bank account password via e-banking under any circumstances.
